The Greater Flint Health Coalition and Commit to Fit! are pleased to announce that seven Genesee County businesses have qualified for the Commit to Fit! Certified Healthy Workplace Designation. This certification aims to acknowledge local businesses actively working to improve the health of their employees by providing workplace wellness programming and a healthy business environment.


Atherton Elementary School Wins the First Annual Commit to Fit! Active Schools Challenge

Atherton Elementary students and staff have won the first annual Commit to Fit! Active Schools Challenge. The Commit to Fit! Active Schools challenge was designed to promote health and wellness within local schools while creating some “healthy” competition. Throughout the month of March, students from 10 schools strived to achieve 30 minutes of physical activity a day. Participating schools included: Atherton Elementary, Otter Lake Elementary, Durant-Tuuri-Mott Elementary, Rankin Elementary, Torrey Hill Intermediate School, North Road Elementary, Lake Fenton Middle School, Barhitte Elementary, Lakeville Middle and High Schools, and State Road Elementary.

Collectively, over 1,700 students from participating schools logged 1,896,233 minutes of physical activity during the month of March. Atherton Elementary students averaged 1,275 minutes of physical activity, which is equivalent to 41 minutes of activity per day per student. For winning the Commit to Fit! Active Schools Challenge, Atherton Elementary School will receive a trophy as well as a monetary prize of $2,000 for use towards health and wellness programming. Individuals that reached the goal of 30 minutes of physical activity per day were entered into a raffle to win a variety of local gift certificates.

Baker College of Flint Wins 2016 Commit to Fit! College Challenge

Baker College of Flint students have won the 4th annual Commit to Fit! College Challenge. The Commit to Fit! College Challenge promotes physical activity in local colleges by giving students the chance to take part in a little “healthy competition.” Throughout the month of February, students from Mott Community College, Baker College of Flint, and the University of Michigan-Flint, strived to achieve 30 minutes of physical activity a day.

Collectively, Flint-area college students logged over 120,000 minutes of activity on commit2fit.com in February. Baker College of Flint students averaged 1,238 minutes of physical activity, equivalent to 43 minutes of activity per day.

The Commit to Fit! College Challenge trophy will be presented to Baker College of Flint students on Thursday, March 10, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. at Baker College of Flint. In addition to the trophy, students that logged over 30 minutes of physical activity per day were entered to win a variety of gift certificates to local businesses as well as cash prizes. Individual winners were announced Thursday, March 3, 2016 on the Commit to Fit! Facebook page.

Commit to Fit! Active Schools Challenge Open to K-12 Schools in Genesee County

To promote health and wellness within local schools while creating some “healthy” competition, Commit to Fit!, in conjunction with the Genesee Intermediate School District, announces the 2016 Active Schools Challenge. The Challenge seeks to engage all 21 Genesee County school districts to participate and promote physical activity among their students.

During the month of March, students and teachers from Active Schools Challenge participating schools will track their physical activity, with a daily goal of being active for 30 minutes. The school with the highest average minutes of physical activity during the month of March will receive a monetary donation for use towards health and wellness programming. Students that reach the daily physical activity goal will also be entered into a raffle drawing to win prizes such as gift cards, skating passes, and more!

“We know that kids that are active during the day generally perform better academically. The Commit to Fit! Active Schools Challenge is an opportunity to encourage kids to get moving and win prizes for their school while doing so” states Nichole Smith-Anderson, Project Manager at the Greater Flint Health Coalition. “We are looking forward to making this an annual event in Genesee County, similar to the Commit to Fit! Fall 4 Fitness Business to Business Challenge.”

Commit to Fit College Challenge kicks off February 1st!

The Commit to Fit! College Challenge will kick off with a no-holds-barred Dodgeball Tournament Thursday, Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. in the University of Michigan-Flint (UM-Flint) Recreation Center. Participating colleges include Mott Community College, Baker College of Flint, and the University of Michigan-Flint.

“This is a fun way to kick-off our month-long Commit to Fit! College Challenge going on through the month of February,” said Jennifer McDonald, Mott Community College (MCC) Director of Admissions & Student Success Services.

The Commit to Fit! College Challenge runs February 1st – 29th and focuses on promoting physical activity in local colleges by giving students the chance to take part in a little “healthy competition.” Sign up is free at commit2fit.com. During the month-long challenge, students are encouraged to be active for a total of 870 minutes. Students can log this activity at commit2fit.com, via the Commit to Fit! mobile app, or by syncing their wearable fitness device.

Students that reach the goal of 870 minutes of activity will be entered into a raffle for great prizes including gift certificates and cash! The college with the highest average minutes per participant will win the Commit to Fit! College Challenge traveling trophy and bragging rights.

Past winners include UM-Flint in 2013 and 2015 and MCC in 2014.

Commit to Fit! Fall 4 Fitness Business-to-Business Challenge Winners Announced

With 107 businesses, organizations and community groups participating this year, Commit to Fit! is pleased to announce the organizational winners of the fifth annual Commit to Fit! Fall 4 Fitness Challenge. The Commit to Fit! Fall 4 Fitness Challenge is a community-wide challenge designed to increase the practice of daily physical activity among local employees and residents. The month-long challenge, which took place during October, is sponsored by Diplomat Pharmacy. Commit to Fit! is a community-wide program of the Greater Flint Health Coalition.

The overall goal of the one month challenge was for each participant to engage in a total of 900 minutes of physical activity during October (an average of 30 minutes of physical activity daily). One half of all participants met or exceeded the overall challenge goal. In total over 2.3 million minutes of physical activity were logged during the month of October as part of the 2015 Fall 4 Fitness Challenge.

New this year, participants meeting a weekly goal of 150 minutes of physical activity were eligible to win one of four wearable fitness devices with the capability to connect directly with commit2fit.com. Individual incentive winners will be released on Monday, November 9th via commit2fit.com.

This certification aims to acknowledge local businesses actively working to improve the health of their employees by providing workplace wellness programming and a healthy business environment.

With Americans spending 40% of their time at work or engaged in work related activities, employers play a large role in employee health. When employees are encouraged to engage in healthy habits at work, those strategies translate to their families and the community as a whole. Supporting a healthy workforce supports a healthy community, and these Genesee County workplaces are leading the way.

Following an open application process available to any Flint and Genesee County area business, certifications were awarded based upon the comprehensiveness of each businesses’ wellness program in the following categories: workplace environment, policies, leadership support and wellness program components. Point requirements were based upon business size to ensure fairness amongst local businesses.

The Commit to Fit! Certified Healthy Workplace application will be offered twice annually, with the second application period made available September 1 through September 30, 2015. The Commit to Fit! Certified Healthy Workplace application is available on Commit2fit.com.

Commit to Fit! Fall 4 Fitness Challenge Registration Open to All Genesee County Businesses, Organizations, and Community Groups

To promote health and wellness within the local business community while creating some “healthy” competition, Commit to Fit! is pleased to present the 2015 Fall 4 Fitness Challenge. Now in its fifth year, the community-wide, business-to-business wellness challenge will take place from October 1st to October 31st.

Sponsored by Diplomat Pharmacy, Inc., pre-registration for businesses, organizations, and community groups is now open via Commit to Fit.

The challenge is available free-of-charge to any Flint & Genesee County business, organization, or community group interested in bringing wellness to the workplace. Last year, 83 local businesses participated.

Throughout the month of October, Fall 4 Fitness participants will track and earn points for their physical activity, with a daily goal of being active or exercising for 30 minutes per day. As challenge participants, individuals will earn Commit to Fit! Wellness Points for their Business, Organization, or Community Group for all physical activity tracked on commit2fit.com.

Based on their employee participation, businesses will compete against one another to see which will be recognized and rewarded for achieving the “Highest Level of Participation” and “Highest Level of Goal Attainment” with the winners earning the Commit to Fit! distinction of the “Healthiest Business in Genesee County.”

Individuals who reach the challenge goal of 30 minutes of physical activity daily throughout the month will also be entered into a raffle drawing to win cash prizes, fitness club memberships, massages, gift certificates, and more!

All registration and activity tracking is done online via Commit to Fit!’s website, commit2fit.com, a free interactive wellness website made available to all who either live or work in Genesee County as a free resource to track and improve health behaviors while also providing health tips, tools, and additional resources.

Any Flint & Genesee County Business, Organization, or Community Group should first complete the online business commitment form.

The 2015 Fall 4 Fitness Challenge kickoff event will take place Friday, September 25, 2015 at 12:00 noon in the new downtown Flint Urban Park (former Genesee Towers site).
