GENESEE COUNTY, MI (April 12, 2018) – West Shore Elementary and Goodrich High School students and staff have won the third annual Greater Flint Health Coalition Commit to Fit! Active Schools Challenge.
The Commit to Fit! Active Schools Challenge was designed to promote health and wellness within local schools while creating some “healthy” competition. Throughout the month of March, over 2,000 students from Genesee County schools strived to achieve 30 minutes of physical activity a day. Collectively, students from 30 schools across 15 districts in Genesee County logged over 3.8 million minutes of physical activity during the month.
The Active Schools Challenge had two competition categories, one for Elementary Schools and one for Middle/High Schools. This year approximately $10,000 in prizes will be awarded to the winning schools to support school-based wellness activities year-round. The winning schools from both the Elementary and Middle/High School challenge are listed below with their associated monetary donation for school wellness programming.
The winning Elementary Schools are:
1. Westshore Elementary – $1,500
2. University of Michigan Flint ECDC – $1,200
3. Torrey Hill Intermediate – $1,000
4. Rankin Elementary – $800
5. Perry Innovation Center – $600
The winning Middle/High Schools are:
1. Goodrich High School – $1,500
2. Carman Ainsworth Middle School – $1,200
3. AGS Middle School – $1,000
Each school worked hard weekly to encourage students, teachers, and families to engage in physical activity both in and outside of the classroom. For winning the Greater Flint Health Coalition’s Commit to Fit! Active Schools Challenge, West Shore Elementary and Goodrich High School will also receive a trophy to display in their school. All participants that reached the goal of 900 minutes of physical activity overall were entered into a raffle to win a variety of gift cards, skating passes, and more!
The Active Schools Challenge was generously sponsored by the Greater Flint Health Coalition, Hurley Foundation, Genesys Athletic Club, and Oxford Bank.
