Atherton Elementary School Wins the First Annual Commit to Fit! Active Schools Challenge

Atherton Elementary students and staff have won the first annual Commit to Fit! Active Schools Challenge. The Commit to Fit! Active Schools challenge was designed to promote health and wellness within local schools while creating some “healthy” competition. Throughout the month of March, students from 10 schools strived to achieve 30 minutes of physical activity a day. Participating schools included: Atherton Elementary, Otter Lake Elementary, Durant-Tuuri-Mott Elementary, Rankin Elementary, Torrey Hill Intermediate School, North Road Elementary, Lake Fenton Middle School, Barhitte Elementary, Lakeville Middle and High Schools, and State Road Elementary.

Collectively, over 1,700 students from participating schools logged 1,896,233 minutes of physical activity during the month of March. Atherton Elementary students averaged 1,275 minutes of physical activity, which is equivalent to 41 minutes of activity per day per student. For winning the Commit to Fit! Active Schools Challenge, Atherton Elementary School will receive a trophy as well as a monetary prize of $2,000 for use towards health and wellness programming. Individuals that reached the goal of 30 minutes of physical activity per day were entered into a raffle to win a variety of local gift certificates.

The Active Schools Challenge was generously sponsored by the Greater Flint Health Coalition, the Hurley Foundation, Genesys Health System, the Crim Fitness Foundation, Cybex International, and ELGA Credit Union.
