Baker College of Flint students have won the 4th annual Commit to Fit! College Challenge. The Commit to Fit! College Challenge promotes physical activity in local colleges by giving students the chance to take part in a little “healthy competition.” Throughout the month of February, students from Mott Community College, Baker College of Flint, and the University of Michigan-Flint, strived to achieve 30 minutes of physical activity a day.
Collectively, Flint-area college students logged over 120,000 minutes of activity on commit2fit.com in February. Baker College of Flint students averaged 1,238 minutes of physical activity, equivalent to 43 minutes of activity per day.
The Commit to Fit! College Challenge trophy will be presented to Baker College of Flint students on Thursday, March 10, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. at Baker College of Flint. In addition to the trophy, students that logged over 30 minutes of physical activity per day were entered to win a variety of gift certificates to local businesses as well as cash prizes. To promote health and wellness within local schools while creating some “healthy” competition, Commit to Fit!, in conjunction with the Genesee Intermediate School District, announces the 2016 Active Schools Challenge. The Challenge seeks to engage all 21 Genesee County school districts to participate and promote physical activity among their students.
During the month of March, students and teachers from Active Schools Challenge participating schools will track their physical activity, with a daily goal of being active for 30 minutes. The school with the highest average minutes of physical activity during the month of March will receive a monetary donation for use towards health and wellness programming. Students that reach the daily physical activity goal will also be entered into a raffle drawing to win prizes such as gift cards, skating passes, and more!
“We know that kids that are active during the day generally perform better academically. The Commit to Fit! Active Schools Challenge is an opportunity to encourage kids to get moving and win prizes for their school while doing so” states Nichole Smith-Anderson, Project Manager at the Greater Flint Health Coalition. “We are looking forward to making this an annual event in Genesee County, similar to the Commit to Fit! Fall 4 Fitness Business to Business Challenge.”
This Challenge is sponsored by the Greater Flint Health Coalition, the Hurley Foundation, Genesys Health System, the Crim Fitness Foundation, and ELGA Credit Union.
